The four talent pools
Virginia's talent splits along four lines — federal/cleared (NoVA), healthcare and finance operators (RVA), university research (Cville and Blacksburg), and maritime/defense industrial (HR). Match your hiring to the pool that fits your stage.
Cleared talent
If your business does not require security clearances, you will pay a premium to hire cleared talent away from federal contractors. Don't. If your business does require it, NoVA is one of the deepest cleared talent markets in the world.
Remote-first reality
Most Virginia startups operate remote-first with a regional anchor office. Two days a week in person is the modal answer.
